Leader's Message

There is no single institute at which the origin of our habitable planet is actively studied as its central research theme. In this COE program, we establish "The Research Center for the Evolving Earth and Planets" at Tokyo Institute of Technology. With this program, we plan to investigate the early history of our planet, from accretion of the solar nebula through planetary formation, development of a global magma ocean, birth of primitive life and its evolution, and, finally the beginning of modern life that depends so heavily on oxygen.
Our COE program is composed of members of the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences as well as collaborative scientists in the closely related departments of Life and Environmental Sciences. Four research groups have been organized by discipline but are planned to be highly interactive;
these include:
1) Solid earth evolution
2) Earth history and life evolution
3) Environmental analysis
4) Theoretical planetary physics
We have also set up an interdisciplinary program for doctoral course students in the graduate schools of Earth & Planetary Sciences, Bioscience & Biotechnology, and Environmental Science & Technology. The goal of our COE program is to establish a new scientific field dedicated to examining the genetic link between life and planetary evolution.
